Enrichment
The after-school enrichment program includes classes in mathematics and English reading comprehension and writing.
Language
Global Montessori offers language classes for both Chinese and Japanese in beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.
The Chinese Language Program
The beginner class introduces the fundamental sentence structure and four-tone phonetic system of Chinese pronunciation. Students start out learning basic conversational skills, such as common greetings, counting, time, money, and directions. By the end of the class, students will have a much wider vocabulary and be able to talk about their family, shopping, and holidays, among many other topics. Students will also be introduced to Chinese characters. Students learn the individual radicals that compose the characters and the proper stroke order. Instruction is usually given in Mandarin, but occasionally will be translated into English when absolutely necessary.
The intermediate level focuses more on dialogues, role-playing in everyday life situations, more complex sentence structure, more complicated characters, and a familiarity with Chinese customs and lifestyle. By the end of the class, students will be able to discuss changes, comparisons, and more in-depth descriptions. They also will be able to describe more specific events, such as visiting a friend or recalling past events.
The advanced class is geared towards students who already have a good understanding of the language and builds on an understanding of and appreciation for Chinese culture and literature. The class includes presentations and speeches to reinforce speaking abilities, and in-class participation is encouraged to enhance listening skills.
The Japanese Language Program
The beginner level for the Japanese language program begins with basic greetings, introductions, and simple descriptions. Students will be introduced to customs and major aspects of the culture. Students will also learn the two phonetic alphabets (hiragana and katakana) as well as some of the elementary kanji characters, and the distinction between more formal and more informal speech.
In order to take the intermediate level, students must be familiar with the two phonetic alphabets and some basic knowledge of Japanese language and sentence structure. The intermediate level focuses on communication, more in-depth vocabulary, and more complex grammar. Students will also continue to study cultural events, customs, and the different religions.
